RSD / CRPS Injuries

  Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy: The Disorder

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a medical condition characterized by unrelenting pain, swelling, discoloration, temperature, and physical changes in the affected body part. RSD / CRPS can affect any part of the body, but occurs most frequently in the hands, arms, feet, shoulders, and knees.

Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for RSD / CRPS. The disorder may persist for a prolonged period of time, possibly for the rest of the patient's life. Understandably, the prospect of never being cured places a serious psychological burden on the patient. This fact, combined with the chronic, severe nature of the pain experienced, often makes CRPS patients susceptible to depression, anxiety, feelings of isolation, and a sense of hopelessness and helplessness.

   Misconceptions about Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

RSD / CRPS is generally misunderstood in the medical community and is even more misunderstood in the legal arena. The potential problems start early in the case when the client is being treated medically. RSD / CRPS is often misdiagnosed as a psychiatric or mental disorder. Therefore, in prosecuting a case involving a client with RSD / CRPS, it is critical that the victim be properly evaluated and diagnosed by RSD / CRPS specialists and experts.

Few lawyers have handled these cases and had experience in dealing with the medical issues involved. The evaluation of such a case involves a meticulous review of medical records and consultation with qualified specialists. The lawyer handling your case must understand the origin and progression of the disease. Too often, lawyers who do not fully understand the extent and permanency of the disorder undervalue CRPS cases. Because the disease is often permanent, the resulting care and treatment is expensive, and lifetime medical bills alone can be staggering. It is therefore critical that the lawyer fully understand the disease so that the client’s financial recovery can be maximized.
